According to data from US Energy Information Association, Malaysia’s oil production in 2018 averaged more than 600,000 bbl/d. Oil production in this country largely contributed by numbers of local and international companies such as Petronas Carigali, Shell, ExxonMobil and PTTEP (previously Murphy Oil).

These operator companies are also known as Petroleum Arrangement Contractors (PACs). Basically, PACs is the term that being used to refer oil companies that enters Production Sharing Contracts (PSC) with Petronas, as the custodian of Malaysia’s petroleum resources, to explore, develop and produce oil and gas resources in Malaysia.

But are there any other companies doing the same business here in Malaysia, at least other than companies mentioned earlier?

The answer is many. In this list, we introduce majority (if not all) of these oil companies that are currently operating in Malaysia. Some of them are well established and perhaps the other we may not be too familiar with.

1. Petronas Carigali

Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd is Petronas’ upstream arm that involves in exploration, development and production of oil and gas resources. Petronas Carigali is the biggest operator in Malaysia, operating 60 percent of total Malaysian assets.

2. Shell

Shell has a long history in Malaysia, more than 100 years of presence in this country. In fact, Shell made a Malaysia’s first oil discovery in 1910 on Canada Hill, onshore Miri, Sarawak.

3. ExxonMobil

ExxonMobil is one of major upstream operator in Malaysia. Most of their assets located offshore Terengganu, producing one-fifth of national’s oil production and about one-half of natural gas supplies to Peninsular Malaysia.

4. PTTEP

PTT Exploration and Production (PTTEP) is Thai national oil company, which currently is one of major oil and gas producer in Malaysia after acquiring 100% Murphy Oil’s Corporation Malaysia asset for reported USD 2.1B.

5. Repsol

Repsol Malaysia (previously known as Talisman Malaysia Limited), acquired Talisman Energy in 2015. This Spanish company operates Kinabalu field (offshore Sabah) and PM3 (offshore Peninsular Malaysia)

6. HESS

This U.S oil producer operates North Malay Basin located 186 miles offshore Peninsular Malaysia. The field was first discovered in 1979 and begin production in 2013.

7. Petrofac (Malaysia PM304)

Petrofac operates Block PM 304 which include Cendor and West Desaru field. PM304 was initially regarded as marginal field with first oil achieved in 2006. Today this field is considered among the largest oil field in Malaysia.

8. Enquest

London-listed Enquest operations in Malaysia include PM8 and Seligi field. This is following its acquisition of ExxonMobil interest in both field in June 2014.

9. SapuraOMV Upstream

SapuraOMV Upstream is a joint venture between Sapura Energy Bhd and Austria’s OMV Aktiengesellschaft (OMV AG). In November 2018, OMV has agreed to buy 50% stake of Sapura Energy E&P, an exploration and production arm of Sapura Energy.

10. International Petroleum Corporation (IPC)

Previously known as Lundin in Malaysia, this newly formed exploration and production company, as a result of spin off by Lundin Petroleum on their non-norwegian asset in 2017. IPC operates Bertam field located in Block Pm307.

11. Vestigo Petroleum

Vestigo Petroleum,wholly owned by Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, was incorporated with focus on development and production from small, marginal and co-located mature fields.

12. JX Nippon

JX Nippon Oil and Exploration (NOEX) is a Japanese petroleum company, involved in exploration, development and production of hydrocarbon resources. It operates few field in Malaysia mainly in offshore Sarawak, namely Helang, Layang and etc.

13. Mubadala Petroleum

Mubadala Petroleum has been present in Malaysia since 2010. This Abu Dhabi’s company is the Operator of Block SK320, offshore Sarawak. In their statement in March 2018, Mubadala and its partners to develop Pegaga’s field, their first development in Malaysia

14. Hibiscus Petroleum

This is Malaysia’s first listed independent oil and gas exploration and production company. In 2018, it has acquired 50% participating interest of North Sabah PSC from Shell, and assumed the role of operator in that field.

15. Coastal Energy

Coastal Energy is an international E&P company with asset in Thailand and Malaysia, which have been merged with Compañía Española de Petróleos, S.A.U. (“CEPSA“) . In July 2012, Coastal Energy entered into a Small Field Risk Service Contract (“RSC”) with Petroliam Nasional Berhad (“PETRONAS”) for the development and production of petroleum from the Kapal, Banang and Meranti cluster of small fields (the “KBM Cluster”) offshore Peninsular Malaysia

15. Roc Oil

Roc oil is an multinational oil and gas company based in Sydney, Australia. ROC has a 30% participating interest in the D35/D21/J4 PSC, offshore Sarawak.

16. Kebabangan Petroleum Operating Company (KPOC)

KPOC is an operating company between Petronas Carigali (40%), Shell (30%) and ConocoPhilips (30%), set up to operate Kebabangan field cluster, offshore Sabah.

17. RHP Mukah

In Malaysia, RHP Mukah operates the SK331 PSC, located onshore Sarawak and currently under exploration stage.

18. ConocoPhilips

This US-based company is the world largest’s independent E&P company based on the production and proved reserves. The company currently hold interests in varying stage of exploration, development and production in Malaysia. Among the producing block the company participates in as non-operator are; Block G (Malikai and Siakap North Petai), Block J (Gumusut) and Kebabangan Cluster.

19. Pexco Sarawak

Pexco Sarawak N.V. is an independent exploration and production company. The company is currently under exploration phase with their exploration blocks located offshore Sarawak.

20. Ophir Production

Ophir Production Sdn Bhd is an independent exploration and production (E&P) company, jointly owned by Octanex, Scomi Energy Services Bhd and Vestigo Petroleum Sdn Bhd. The company develop Ophir field, located offshore Peninsular Malaysia, under Risk Service Contract (RSC).

22. Total E&P

In Malaysia, this French oil and gas giant company operate offshore Blocks DW2E (88%) and SBN (34.9%) located off the coast of Sarawak state on the island of Borneo.

Salamander Energy enters Malaysia in 2013 and the company operates Block in the Malacca Straits, offshore west coast peninsular Malaysia.

A joint venture company between Petronas Carigali (40%), Pertamina (30%) and PetroVietnam (30%) to operate Block SK305, offshore Sarawak.
